Spalted Maple Collar top choices.

Last night I turned a few more little caps to sit on the collar. I can't return the collar since there's no way to chuck it and I know I'd never get as nice a fit, or flow of curve if I tried turning another separate from the hf, so this collar is going to stay, along with one of the little caps (unless I just decide to fill the little hole with a dab of epoxy dyed black.
I did find some scraps of ambrosia maple big enough to cut a little spindle blank from, not a perfect match to the spalted maple, but close enough.

I think I'm leaning towards #5, 6 or 7 or possibly 3.

Nice hollow form Kathy. I like 1 and 3 the best. I think 1 would be best if the top of the collar was a little concave. The small ones look good too. Mostly I just like the piece even without the tops. (You must like turning small tops.)

6, 7 and 1, in that order. I like 1 because it makes the collar look smaller by comparison. 6 and 7 make the collar look more like a handle. All of them are nice.

6 Rest seem to distract from the rest of the piece. It provides a stopping point without overstating the pinnacle.

Kathy - I like #1 best because it mirrors the main form and it also extends the curve that the cove projects. While the rest of the tops look really nice - only #1 really stands out to me.

Well, why don't I just be contrary:cool:. If I had to choose I would say #4. OK, so you can't put it back on lathe ( obviously no vacuum chuch ). Hmmmm. What about carving the top like a ring set and sanding a piece of the ambrosia maple like a multi-faceted diamond. OK, it may be goofy, but then again, my brain resides outside the box.

I dig the first one with a slight modification: keeping the shape of the button but thinning the dia alittle, it looks to over hang the top of the collar by a 1/32 - i think by making it even or slightly smaller would look perfect with the same shape. Maybe a poll would be in order next time around ?

What you did with the wood came out great, i like the shape of the hf.

Kathy, I was just reading the list of favorites and I have come to one conclusion. You have to be sorry you asked!!!! Not really, but it is a testament to the fact "that there is no accounting for taste". No matter which one you choose, most of us will really like the piece.

#1 edged out #3 by a shaving, followed closely by #6 then #2. Those 4 are clearly the favorites.
