Table top question

My brother is going to "help" me build a dining room table. I will turn the legs and he will do everything else.

My question is, I would like to use an exotic top but don't want to use veneer due to durability. Is it possible to buy exotic burl wood in quarter inch thick pieces? I want a piece that is about 20" by 60". There will be a hardwood border around it.

Maybe resaw your own? Book-matched pairs, plus with all from the same hunk 'o wood means color consistency when finishing.
