I was able to get a few pieces of wood from my son in law's juniper tree. The heart wood looked brown on the previously cut surface, but when I cut it fresh the heart wood was very red. I attended one of Dave Schweitzer's demos at the AAW and wanted to try a fluted piece. I was hoping to be able to capture some of the reddish color at the base of the flutes but was not able to achieve this as much as I would have liked due to the thickness of the Wall. It is 6" X 6" and finished with about 5 coats of WOP.

Comments and critiques are welcome.

Opps, sorry about the size of the picture. I don't know how to correct it now that it is posted.

That's a really great looking piece! It all works - the shape, grain, and flutes.

Thanks for the kind remarks. The wood was nice to turn, kind of like cedar. I was excited to see the red when I started cutting in to it and have several more pieces roughed out.

Nice job on fluting, especially since you are just getting started on that! Very nice piece

Very nice Marc! Great job on the fluting and I like the mix of heartwood and sapwood. Bet it made the shop smell good while you were turning it!

Nice work, Marc! I wonder if you do the next form more vase shaped would you end up with the red bottom area you are after?

Thanks Eric, Kathy, Michell, and John. The shop does smell nice when turning juniper. John, I wanted to see red in the inner part of the flutes as well as the base of the piece. the pieced didn't have enough symmetry to allow this to the extent I wanted and I hollowed out too much to really get down to more of the red in the flutes. (Turn and learn.) I have a vase shaped piece drying and as you suggest and there is more red at the bottom of it. I have another fluted piece where the walls got too thin which I will post. Thanks again everyone for your comments.
