View Full Version : Water Oak in Abundance

With the drought in this part of Texas, we are losing "water oaks" by the hundreds. My neighbor had one next to his pool which he had to take down. Had been dead on the stump, most of the year, but I had to try to turn some. It was relatively dry and cracked and spalting had started. Has a pretty grain I think. Made this for my neighbor to remember their tree by.
Turned to finish size, sand to 600, one coat of Bartley's gel varnish, dry overnight then buff with beeswax.
Comments and criticisms welcome.

Looks nice, Tom! It's too bad about the trees... I find oak much prettier to look at than to turn.

That has rugged good looks. To bad about the dry hot summer and fires. I was stationed in Ft. Worth in the mid sixties.

Tom, looks like you may have caught that one in the nick of time - nice spalting and color, but looks challenging to turn. Good work!

nice spalting and color, but looks challenging to turn. !
Actually, John, it was easy to turn, I thought. Did not expect the spalting when I cut it. Have two in my yard I have to take down but they are smaller than my neighbors.
