This is a relatively white piece of hard maple with no distinguished figure so I used my pyro pen and a fish scale tip to decorate the rim. Finished with water white lacquer.

Now, that is an interesting effect on a bowl rim!! I like it, Bob, and your bowl forms are always pleasant to look at.

That's a clean looking plate. I usually don't like many pieces where the wood has little character, but the fish scales really turned this into something. Very nice.

Nice job on the bowl. The rim treatment dresses up the bowl a lot. A suggestion - after you burn and before applying your finish, rub down the burned area with some rubbing alcohol to remove the residue left behind from the burning. This will remove the slight discoloration around fish scales.

That is a beauty. Very pleasing form and the pyro just sits it off.

How long did it take to add the fish scales to the rim? It looks tedious but was well worth it.

It did take a while, but more because of the burner pen I was using was a type that the tip is pushed into the pen. Any contamination causes it to lose conductivity, so things were a little slower than I wanted. Probably took 45 minutes. They are just randomly burned here and there.

Amazing what a little time and imagination can do, the rim completely makes the piece in my opinion.

I hate to say this but for me, the decoration is a distraction that draws attention away from the strengths of the bowl. It's a beautiful, understated form and the "plainness" of the wood invites the form to take center stage. But my focus is pulled away from those features by the fish scale markings.
