I was so stoked about the fantastic material John Keeton sent me that I simply could not wait to make something out of it. I stayed up all night working on this. The form, finial, pedestal and base, all are made from the unbelievably beautiful and so rare Kentucky newsprint. I don't think I have ever worked with such incredible material before and I probably will never see this stuff again. I can't believe John was willing to part with it. Talk about a generous guy! I actually felt a bit guilty using this material because I did not think my skills were sufficient to do justice to this precious material. But I did the best I was capable of so please, don't be too hard on me.

Now I gotta figure out what to do with the rest of that stuff...

I'm sorry David, but the proportions are out of whack! The spray at the top of the faper penial is asymetrical, not in keeping with the rest of the paper porn, and the base appears too small to properly balance the ball on a stick. The fat foot also deprives the leg of dainty delicacy, and the white wrap hiding the joint of the knobby knee fails the leg law of thirds test. In conclusion, I would say this is poor white trash, but might serve as a fire starter, which you probably don't need on the Left Coast!

David, I want to apologize for the half cocked assessment of this piece by Jamie. One would think, as a fellow Kentuckian, and even a member of my own turning club, that he would have a much better appreciation of Kentucky Folk Art. What you have done here is nothing short of phenomenal. With just simple materials, you have provided a work that is virtually wrapped in National significance (I see you did use the National news section!), and is strongly supported by the opinions of those held in high esteem by various members of our society (the Op Ed section is on the other side, I believe).

Please don't let the naysayers put you down. I am honored by your use of my gift, and this piece deserves an appropriate title. Might I suggest "Breaking News"!

No Turning back now. Yup, you're a gonner fer shure.

One dose of KY in any form, and the skin tone on your neck turns a bright scarlet. The proof is in your rendition of the KY state bird. And no, the KY state bird is not the house fly.

Your journey to the dark side is nearly complete. If you want, I'll bet John can hook you up with a realtor to make your relocation easier.

Once you get settled in in your new trappings, see if you can get a day pass to cross the river and make a visit to my shop in Ohio, ya'll.

If you think the Ky folk do wonders with that material, you should see what they can acomplish with the pages from a Sears and Roebuck catalogue.

David, I don't know what all the flap is about. I think you on track with another "art" form. Too be honest with you, you have created in a few minutes a piece that is by and large much better that some of the "folk or urban art" that I have seen at shows. This could be a real money maker for you:cool::D

"...I want to apologize for the half cocked assessment of this piece by Jamie..."

Hey... anyone who can't appreciate this can bite my shoe. I can't believe that Jamie guy is a "cover picker" over on WoW. Makes me want to start my own woodturners site where membership can be limited to people who understand art. That guy wouldn't know art if he stepped in it! Scheech...

"Molto Divertente..."

Watch your tongue there John... this is a "G rated" site. No fair hiding behind a furren language...

"Now it can't even be used in the johnny house!"

Sure it can... just don't push too hard...

Exquisite form David, and the NE tops it off beautifully. The only thing I would have done differently is use the cartoon section for the stem, much better balance!

"... I would have..use(d) the cartoon section for the stem..."

Well, Keeton did not send that section to me. With all that color and figure, I guess he just could not bring himself to part with it. But lets not go all ungrateful here. I feel fortunate to have gotten any at all!

I'm really surprised no one noticed this, but I just gotta point out the incredible grain pattern in this piece. I dunno, kinda like the grain of a zillion trees in there. And the color contrast! Should sell really fast and if for some crazy reason it don't, I'd say just burn it so no one can have it to enjoy!

I had to run some errands this evening and while I was gone, my daughter.... well... it seems we were out of T.P. and she spotted my latest "piece" sitting on the table where I'd left it for my wife to see when she got home and... well... I guess Mark Twain's "curtain of charity" has to be drawn over the rest of that scene. Suffice it to say that "Notizie del Giorno" is no more! Such is life. Hair today, gone tomorrow.

I cannot help but suspect that the perverse, unfounded and excoriating "critique" by one who's name I will not utter, opened a channel to the "dark side" which allowed a number of disincarnate negative energies, whose sole reason for existing is to destroy all that is good and beautiful, to gain entry to this plane of existence. So as my grand pappy would have said... "Thanks fer nuttin..."

I am only glad that I had the foresight to photograph this piece before it was flushed.... no, I can't go on... sorry...

I can recall some other truisms appropriate or not to this situation, such as "this too shall pass" or "it will all come work out in the end," so RIP! Your "I just couldn't wait" title proved to be prophetic!

David,
Is there any chance your family pulled a fast one and sent your art to "Overhaulin". It could reappear with chrome pipes and wide tires.

I only wish... But I saw the evidence of it's destruction with my own eyes. I could only look upon the carnage for a moment before it disappeared in the whirlpool, but what I saw in that horrible moment left no doubt in my mind... "Notizie del Giorno" is gone forever... cosi va...

Do you have a plumber's phone number on speed dial- you may need him in an emergancy soon! Hearing your explanation to him of the circumstances causing this occlusion would be entertainment for a whole evening!

Alas, my plumber refused to even attempt recovery. He told me that this was his "day job" and that, as time and resources allowed, he was a woodturner himself and was well aware of the folly of attempting to extract objects of this delicate nature from drain pipes. He also told me that he worried about getting in the middle of a domestic dispute which, apparently, are not uncommon in the households of woodturners and that he was often called upon to retrieve turned objects by the turner which had been similarly dispensed of by the spouse and that he had sworn to never again become embroiled in such situations.
