I visited a friend and he had a 50# red mallee burl laying on the natural edge side of the wood. I told him that was damaging the "bark/teeth". I had seen it in his shop for about 2 years and ended up leaving with it on Tuesday. I waited until I could spend several hours working on it. I hate to start a turning that can be completed in 1 day and not finishing it. I started about 3 pm yesterday and at 9:15 I brought it up from the basement. I need to apply more lacquer and 1 light sanding. It beat the crap out of me for 2 1/2 hours of turning. I never saw a single curl come of of the piece. It was HARD as a rock. I like the natural edge and the dark ring around the red heart wood. Just as a added note I only got nibbled at once. Thank God for gloves. Comments are welcome. Thanks for looking Russell

Good Lord, looks like a Piranhas mouth. Beautiful work. It's a good thing you still have all your limbs after this one.

You are a luck man Russell! Both to grab that chunk of burl and to walk away with the same number of fingers you started with! Very wel done!

That is one gorgeous piece of wood and it is very well displayed. Love the ring in the heart wood also!

Really nice piece. Glad all fingers are safe. This stuff is hard and can make you say ouch.

Russell, I have a couple of small mallee burls, and your comments are not encouraging to me!!! I don't like laborious turning, but the results here seem to make it worth the effort! Beautiful color and a neat form. Like turning a sawblade, isn't it??

that looks awesome.
While in your post you say one 50# burl and no where did you say you turned two bowls, but the second and fourth image look like one bowl and the first and third look like another or even possibly three different bowls - just an illusion ?

That piece of burl looks amazing! I love the grain pattern, and again, the red ring around the heartwood. A good job, well done.

That's a beautiful piece! Well done. I have a small piece of Burl and have wanted to turn something like this. So I enjoy seeing the form and the natural variations in the wood as I work up the courage to turn a spinning saw blade. :)

Beautiful piece! Red mallee burl pretty much always produces something amazing. Nice job with the turning -- those are a lot of work.

I'm with Joe. It's like one of those hologram baseball cards. When you tilt the bowl it changes colors. It looks like two different bowls to me too.
