This is a piece that was cored from a larger cherry blank. Simple rolled edge into a small bead with a fillet for shadow. Plate is about 11" across and ! 3/4" deep and flat across the bottom. Finish is Forby's Tung Oil and Lacquer. It should take on a nice darken color with time.

Great looking platter Bob. Beautiful piece of cherry & great execution on centering the grain pattern. I'd give it 2 thumbs up.

Bob - nice plater. Cherry is one of my favorite woods. I know some people have issues with cherry cracking during curing, but I have had good luck with DNA.

Must be that UP cherry. I rough out about 15 bowls of cherry harvested in Chicago's west suburbs, I don't remember any cracking. I just rough out my bowls, coat the end grain and put them on the floor in the garage. A few months later they move up on shelves, then some final drying in the house if the heats on.

very nice. How did you get the bottom so flat?

I used a dome shape scraper. Light cuts with finger guiding along lip on the tool rest. Sanded with a 3" rather stiff velcro pad. It is shaped like this.http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com/store/Turning_Tools___Signature_Tools___Richard_Raffan_K ryo_Tools___Raffan_Kryo_Bowl_Scraper___raffan_kryo _bowl_scraper?Args=

Really nice work Bob, and that rolled edge adds some distinction to it. Looks like something that's been around for a while, and I suspect it will be a cherished piece. Fine work indeed!

Very nice. That's going to improve even more as the cherry color ages.
