Well, most of the time this is something done in my kitchen.

When trying to get the last bit of BBQ sauce, or other substance, out of a bottle, many folks will swing the bottle using the centrifugal force to move the contents of the bottle toward the top. What usually happens when the cap is removed from the bottle is a lot of the "sauce" is in the cap and there might be an uncontrollable flood at the bottle's mouth.

If the bottle is plastic, one easy way to control the flood is to loosen the cap enough to squeeze some air from the bottle and retightening the cap before swinging the bottle. This causes a vacuum in the bottle. When the cap is then unscrewed, almost all of the substance in the bottle will remain in the neck and not in the cap as the air coming back into the bottle will prevent the out rush of the contents.

I have done this kind of automatically for years. Just the other day someone was wondering what I was doing.

Somethings are old habits of which not much thought is given, we just do.
