I recently purchased a large ash burl. 27" by 20" by 12". Needing a way to turn this outboard, and being frugal, I decided to build my own outboard extension. It is made of 3" thick baltic birch, 10 inches wide. Several spacers of 2.25" baltic birch. Used the standard holes provided in legs to bolt on. Added some 4" by 1/2" steel bar to the top of the beams for a bed. Added legs for extra support. And ordered the tool post extension from WMH Group. A fellow turner, Ron Campbell, from our local club , is coming over Sunday to help me turn it. I've never done anything this large before.:eek:209994

I noticed that two of the lock bolts have a handle but the lower bolt require a wrench, the extension are well -build

Thanks everybody. I'll let you know how it works after Sunday.Ray: I did not purchase a locking handle for the bottom of the extension as once you install the extension post you really don't need to adjust there.John

That is a great looking setup. Can we get more pictures of different angles for those of us that would like to try make one? I could use one myself.

Here are the pictures that were requested. First one shows an end view of extension. Second is of end with legs. Third is side view. Fourth is top view. And fifth is an an angle shot. Hope this helps. I can give any other info you may need. Just ask.

Slightly off topic, but what's the blue cart in the background of the first two pictures and where did you get it from? I've been looking for something like that but don't know what to search for.

Paul, the blue cart in the background is something a friend welded for me. Tube steel for legs, angle bracing, casters, and a top.

Thanks John. Guess I need to find some friends that weld.

Took it off last night to bring to a guild members house for some needed design help. I don't want to mess this one up.

John, those are some great pics of the extension!! Sure is beefy - won't be any stability issues with that one!!

You have us all salivating over the burl!!! Get to work!

Ron and John - I've been working on the burl today. I think I finally have a good shape for the bottom. Now I must sand out all the tool marks on the bottom of those rings. And boy are they bad. Thought it would be easier to sand while held in the lathe. Should be done with that tomorrow, then I can mount in chuck and start hollowing out the bowl.Ron- Sorry to disappointed, but I am a slow turner. And I have lots of sanding to do. Hope to be ready by next week.

John,
what is the height of your leg set and what is the height of the bed from leg seam to top of steel bed plates. I'm trying to work this on a 16/42 and it does not have the 3 lower holes that a 3520 has in the leg. I'm gonna hang mine on a steel plate that bolts to the end of my bed where there are 4 threaded holes and I need to get an approximate length to start the cut at. I got my hands on some 8/4 maple today and some 3/4" jig plate so I might even make it out of all steel.
Thanx in advance,
Greg
