I am returning my 1442...I am curious now, what options are there for lathes under the 2k number...I have contacted Dominic Greco, I seen he had a Jet 1642 and several others also, and he seems to be very pleased with his 1642..not sure what others are avail with that same price range...I can get a good price for the 1642 from local store I got my 1442...someone sugguested a NOva 3000 or DVR...the beds are those 2 are shorter and would require additional money in the future to increase bed length...just hoping for some input from other turners....thanks in advance to all who respond...Dennis Taylor

The Jet 1642 is a very good machine for the money. Do go for the 2hp machine if you can afford it and can accomodate the 240v requirement. That extra power will be very useful when you start turning larger objects, especially when they start from very unballanced work or if you buy a coring system.

Powermatic 3520A is around that $2K mark. A scratch and dent version at http://www.generalindustrialsupp.com/product.asp?ID=51 is right at $2K.
