This is the first bowl that I've done this large. I was afraid to chuck it in my lathe when it was out of balance so I put it up in my CNC router and roughed it out first. We sliced the slabs off in my son Matt's band mill. No finish yet. 16" x 3" high. C&C Welcome.

ok, I like where you are headed with this one... but I dont know whether to cry foul or go green with envy about the use of the cnc.

Ed, It looks good.Looking foward to seeing it finished. I knew the Ambrosia Maple would make something nice. I love those lines.

Some nice wood, Ed. It will be interesting to see how things go with the crosscut slab orientation. Neat set up for getting that ready for the lathe!

I did tuck the curve at the bottom and it's ready to part off as soon as the finish hardenes so i can buff it on the lathe. I plan to wet sand to 1200 and then wax and polish it. This morning, there were three small cracks in the rim. I filled them with yellow glue and sawdust. I don't know if it's finished moving or not, but I'll put up with a few small cracks to get that pattern. Here are some pictures of the finished shape and the finish so far.

Ed, I sure hope it doesn't crack because that is beautiful. I love how the design wraps the bowl. What kind of finish did you add to it? I think I may have to get out there and cut me up some of that. I've got a few logs laying around here and there.:D

Donny,
I used a spray enamel from ACE Hardware. It's very fast drying and I think it is lacquer based because it has tolulene in it. Don't use it all..... I want more!!!!

You pulled a hat-trick in my opinion: Wood, Design and Finish - nice job.

Have to say, Im sure its a great view, but i think your nuts for turning in front of a window
I would have broken it twice already !

Joe,
I have a plastic shield in back of and on top of the lathe. It has a 6" dust pickup on the top so it directs all of the fine dust away from me. With that, the window is protected.

That looks great Ed. My Uncle once cut an ash 3 feet in diameter and took a couple of 3 inch cross sections from it. His section split but he made a coffee table out of it. My Dad left his piece in our cellar for about 5 years before he tried his table. Still crack free 20 years later. Hope you have that same luck. Its an awesome looking bowl!
