Seems that most professions have a hat. You have a Chef hat, Construction hard hat, police hat etc.. Why is there not an official woodworkers hat?

I started doing a search and came up with this on Joel's blog from Tools For Working Wood.

What would your idea of an official woodworkers hat be? I myself wear the military type hat shown below from Duluth Trading.

I vote for #2. I wear #4 but not in the shop.

Hats get in the way when putting safety equipment on and off for me. I wear a respirator and earmuffs. Maybe if I switched to plugs and put a clothes-pin on my nose :D:D:D. Now, given my disappearing hair, a hat has been suggested for sun protection but, thank goodness my shop is in doors :)

The real question is "why a hat?".
They get in the way of earmuffs. For the cold?

Well, I wear #2, it currently has the Olde English D on it. But after seeing the instructions for that awesome paper hat...

I wear an old Fedora when resawing at the bandsaw. Even with dust collection, dust comes trickling down from the 20" delta. I like to keep it out of my shirt collar. Otherwise,no hat.

I wouldn't wear a hat in the shop unless it was extremely cold (but then I wouldn't want to be in there for very long, anyway), or maybe if I was spraying lacquer or making a real lot of dust.

Funny thread...I spent my younger years training to be a chef and always hated wearing the toque (chef's hat) as it is always bumping into stuff as you lean forward...like the equivalent of band aids on you fingers when trying to do detail work with hand tools. I kind of like the way Roy Underhill wears his tam'o'shanter (sp?) during his hokey show entry, walking from city to his shop. I am partial to a vintage Boston Red Sox hat, except that in my basement shop I need all the light I can get much less the need for eye shades.

i make a hat out of tin foil so the government can't steel my wood working plans

My hat in the shop is a bandana. Otherwise it's a baseball cap to keep the sun from beating on my eyes.

As a small business, the thing I like best is my hat collection:

-cabinetmaker hat
-salesman hat
-accountant hat
-computer drafting hat
-manager hat
-delivery guy hat
-unemployed pounding the streets hat
-high school kid wasting time on internet hat

The problem is, I often grab the wrong hat. Like this morning....

I gotta get one of these and start using hand tools more...
