Miller Falls 188A drill question

I purchased a MF 188A. It came in good condition. I figured out how to get the bits out and put one in the chuck. But now it is stuck. I can't turn the knurled chuck head with finger pressure, and I don't recall which was it turns for sure and don't want to strip it with pliers. I want to put a cloth on the jaws to avoid damaging the surface but want to make sure which way it turns to loosen. help?

I have a 185A, not a 188A, but it should be the same as other drills: sight down the drill, with the bit pointed at you. turning counter-clockwise loosens, and clockwise tightens.
