Hey all,

Is there a rule of thumb for sizing glass to drop into a frame? Finished opening minus 1/16" or 1/8" or 1/4"? This is my first go with glass panels.

I took the cheap way out and used my raised panel set for rails/stiles and then just cut off/routed out the back. BTW - I will be using those surface mount plastic/rubber retainers.

Any info would be very helpful.

Thanks,
-joe

If they are cabinet doors...DS is fine which is about 1/8"

For full man doors....1/4 tempered or lminated with an inner layer...ends upabout 1/4"

Mark,

Thanks for your response, but my concern was not so much the thickness of the glass, but the overall size in relation to the panel it will be going in. In other works if my opening is 12" x 16", how shall I have my glass supplier cut the glass?

Thanks,
-joe

I can get 1/8" glass from the local Lowes and, depending on the operator, i shoot for 3/16 under sized. A couple of the better guys can hit it less than 1/8.

About 12 years ago, I spent a summer re-glazing windows for my grandfather at his hardware store. Not the funnest job in the world, but it is a fine art. My grandpa usually left 1/8 of an inch on all sides for a window. Good luck with the project.

Thanks all!!

I think I'll go with 3/16" less.
