Hey, guys. Haven't been here on the Creek for awhile. What's new? :o

So, after 8 years of living in Boston (where I worked at This Old House), I'm heading home to southern California. I work in television, and LA is where the jobs are. I've resisted long enough.

What woodworking-type things are there to do and see in LA? Stores? Furniture museums? Groovy lumberyards??

Whereabouts? I left SoCal 35 years ago so I doubt that any of my old wood haunts are still around.

Welcome to Paradise. I live south of LA in Orange County. There's a number of places to get tools and wood. Let us know where you're going to wind up. Hollywood is sort of north and inland, quite a distance from me.

Not in LA but get down there enough to give some advice so here's a list
Gamble house Greene and Greene masterpiece nice walking tour around the neighborhood is good get a map in the bookstore
There is a pasadena bungalow weekend not sure when but would be easy to track down.
Huntington library near pasadena has a large collection of Greene and Greene items
LA county museum of art has a pretty impresive collection of Arts and Crafts era items, not sure what's on display
This fall there are a bunch of exhibits featuring furniture from Sam Maloof, the Eames and others in various locations www.pacificstandardtime.org
Sam Maloofs house.
No idea on lumber yards or other stores

Take pictures of the tools and wood you have now. You might have room for the pictures. J/K

Congrats on the move. I just recently visited Boston though and it seems real nice.

I know of a great lumberyard, purveyor to the Maloof 'Boys,' guys like Darrell Peart, and many of the custom fine furniture makers around. PM me when you get out here and I'll show you around.

Good luck on the move !!!

I'd recommend the 3M 7500 series respirator for daily life in outdoor Los Angeles.

I would DO that because -- as one who spent half a lifetime in San Diego -- making fun of LA was sort of a hobby ;)

Enjoy :)

Welcome home. While we have a wide range of lumber yards throughout Southern California I'm sure lumber prices will be a lot higher than you have where you are now. Prepare for "sticker shock."

Austin Hardwoods is pretty close to you. Look up their address. Just drop by one day and walk through the place. They have a lot of stuff in there.

Anderson Plywood in Culver City plays host 4 times a year to an 'Old Galoot' hand tool swap meet. And in the San Fernando Valley there is a great woodworking club that meets monthly at the Balboa Park Rec Room. As far as visits go, Union Train Station in downtown L.A. The Doheny Mansion in Beverly Hills (you've seen it in movies and TV dozens of times), the Clark/Adams House (a museum) in Malibu.

The knockout punch would be a visit to nearby Santa Barbara for its over-the-top Spanish architecture -- County Courthouse Building, El Encanto Inn, the old Biltmore (now a Marriott) on the beach. Oh, and in Southern California there is a dress code for woodworkers. Wear your sunglasses in the shop.
