I just bought some quartersawn white oak, and when I got it home I was kind of disappointed in the grain. Very little ray fleck is visible. It looks more like rift sawn. When I look at the end grain, it seems as if there's too much angle to it on a lot of the pieces. What is the rule of thumb for the angle of grain in quartersawn vs. rift sawn vs. flat sawn?

I buy my quarter sawn lumber at Frank Miller Lumber and they have a good description of the cutting and sorting process on their website at: http://www.frankmiller.com/default.asp?OPID=19

Thanks for that link, Ralph. I've saved it for future reference.:)

It should have more medullary rays than riff sawn. Rif is nore linear oriented grain.
