Hi, all ==

I need to drill a 3/16" hole through a piece of 1x4 softwood, AND...I need a flat-bottomed recess 3/8" in diameter to accommodate a nut and washer. See illustration below.

I could do this by using a Forstner bit for the recess/countersink, followed by drilling through with a 3/16" bit.

I hope to find a way of completing both operations with one single pull of the drill press arm.

Thanks

[EDIT: a 1/2" dia flat countersink and a 1/4" hole would work, too]

It's called a counterbore drill. Used often in metalworking.

I use 2 Forstner bits. Or a Forstner and a drill bit.

I would try this Kreg mini bit, its a 3/8 bit. it will give you a centered pilot hole. Lowes sells them also

Try these guys, third one down, http://www.morriswoodtool.com/Counterbores.htm

M (http://www.morriswoodtool.com/Counterbores.htm)any years ago I manufactured a wood handle that had a 1/2 x 1/4 counterbore. I made these 1000 or 2000 at a time, and each one had 2 holes. A one piece counterbore cut my drilling time in half (and kept me from going completely insane).

Thanks, guys.

Hey, Dale. That was your first post? Man, you hit the nail directly on the head. Thanks!

Harvey, like you, I'm just trying to maintain my sanity :D. The Morris Wood Tool / COUNTERBORES link is probably exactly what I need. One question:

SYTLE 5A 15304 near the bottom of the page:
Outside dia 1/2" - Hole dia 1/4" - Overall length 1-1/2" - Price $16.97

Please double-check me:
I slide the Adjustable Counterbore over my existing 1/4" bit and affix it to the bit via the counterbore's internal set screw.
I can raise or lower the counterbore to achieve desired depth of hole vs. depth of counterbore.

If that's accurate, you guys have just solved my problem.

That would be correct!

I like Fuller brand available here: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=500&familyName=Type+R+Counterbores Looks like an R-13 $9.01. Not sure about shipping cost. I think woodcraft sells them also.

I thought you wanted a 3/8" CB with a 3/16" thru hole?

Walter, thanks for the Jamestown Distributors link. That looks right, too. And for about half the price :D. I'll check Woodcraft next. Thanks, fellas. You saved me a lot of time and trouble.

I went back and edited my original post to say 1/2" countersink with 1/4" hole would work just as well (see above). No matter. Both configurations are available. Thanks.
