My good friend Chris Vesper, toolmaker extraordinaire, will be showing his wares at WIA. Look him up and check out his squares. These have an integral tab to aid in holding the square against a board. It is fantastic!

Chris has already received praise from The Schwarz for building the best sliding bevel in the world ..

And he will have a number of the detail marking knives I designed ..

I can't afford a Vesper tool, but that tab is one of those genius "why didn't I think of that" things. Maybe there's some precedent for it, but it's the first I've seen, and it's one of those face-palm moments.

The tab has been around for at least 150 years maybe more... If that one is retractable then thats very cool!

The Vesper tab is a different, and handier design from the old machinist's squares. It just flips out of the way, much faster than the usual Starrett type tabs.

Yep, George has it. The tab flips away when unneeded. It is indeed "very cool".

Chris has been here all week, making knurls from my knurls in my shop, and doing some other things. I have looked at a lot of his tools that he brought

I apologize for my ignorance.

knurls? You mean he is making cross-hatched patterns from your cross-hatched patterns?

No,his knurls are the diamond pattern. I have made many knurls that are like the old microscope handle knurls(for example). My knurls are mostly to produce convex surfaces with either straight,or angled lines in them. Some are more extremely angled,to make "rope" pattern knurls. These type knurls were even used in the 18th.C.,and earlier. Here are some things I made using these type knurls.

There are other varieties, but I can't stay on the computer for long, right now. You can't buy these knurls, and they have to be made. I showed Chris how to make them, using my knurls as "mother" knurls, and turned him loose on my lathe. After a time,he was pretty independent in making them. He has a lathe similar to mine back in Oz.

Thanks for the excellent explanation.... It all makes sense now.
