Here's a HF completed from a big ugly piece of BLM. It measures 12.5" X 7.5". Caution and patience was the name of the game as it was hollowed. Notice a little butterfly and "coffee bean" epoxy to keep an a little island intact. I'm not yet sure about the satin finish. C&C's are always welcome.
What do you think of the holes Dr. Keller?

Mike - that is a great looking hollow form! Turning HFs with voids sure makes the process easier!! I like the butterfly - sure fits with the character of the piece! Probably just me, but I would prefer to see the collar have a cove from the form to the opening. To me it just adds to the overall curve.

Nice work! To bad you didn't get this one done in time for the contest... it would have done well!

I am amazed you could get it that thin and keep it together. Nice Job!

Great work, Mike! That little butterfly patch is fantastic... I'd love to know how you did it! I agree with Steve on the collar, but you did a heck of a job with a gorgeous piece of wood!

That's a beauty Mike! Or a beast! It would have been a contender in either category. Add me to the list of those that like how yous used the butterfly to save the wood. That's just a really nice hollowform.

I'd keep that finish Mike! It really lets the wood stand out. Patch is a great touch...your a lucky man to have kept that together!!

Mike, that took some forethought to install the butterfly and epoxy to hold the "island" in there!! Great work, and a beautiful piece of wood. I would stick with the satin finish.

I agree with Steve on the collar, and I probably would have darkened the remainder of the edges of the void with some brown Transtint, with just a touch of black in it. That would bring all of the dark areas together IMO.

Excellent piece, Mike!!

Mike i think this is a great looking piece. As has been said that butterfly tops it off.

Great form and wood. The butterfly is definitely an attention grabber!

i really like the form and the wood must have been exciting turning that

guess i am in the minority but the butterfly doesn't really do anything for me even though its a pretty clever idea and well executed
