I've had this piece of what I believe to be Brazilian Rosewood since 1975. It's about 3/4"X3/4"X7". I'd like to turn a pen out of it. End grain is almost black and it's very heavy and super hard. Would appreciate any help with identifying.
Thanks in advance for your help.

It's got my vote! If it's oily...that may be a good indicator as well.

The purple color could also be East India Rosewood.

Could be Brazilian but it does not have the fire in the color that is typically associated with Brazilian. Usually much more intense red and yellow tones and the dark portions of the grain are much darker. E.I. rosewood tends to have more of a purplish tone. But there is so much variation in rosewoods that it is hard to tell from a pic like this. A lot of the plantation grown Brazilian and E.I. rosewoods tend to be more monotone like this piece. This could even be Pau Ferro which is often sold as "Bolivian Rosewood" even though it is not a rosewood at all.

Guys,
Thanks for your comments. Whatever it is, I'm gonna make pen out of it.
Thanks again.

I believe is it Joe's Rosewood. Should make a couple nice pen blanks.
