Seen a shop fox lathe 16" X42" with a 2 hp variable speed with speed readout at a tool store here in Myrtle Beach on sale for $499.00 looks like a jet anyone know??

Shop Fox is Grizzly's "dealer brand" from my understanding. They have the off white color, and usually are very similar to the Grizzly machine.

It is likely the W1578 which is a lighter weight lathe and slowest speed is 600rpm which is too high for bowls of large diameter. this would be a fine spindle lathe, but faceplate work of a heavy nature would be an issue with the lighter weight and the high rpms.........I looked at this lathe before I got my Grizzly G0698, and decided against it.........I would rather have the Grizzly G0632 which is a clone of the Jet 16/42 evs. or the one I have the G0698 18/47 unit.

When you see a Jet 1642 along side one of these Shopfox lathes, there is not comparison. The bed of the Jet is about twice as wide and the stand is much wider. I was considering the Shopfox until I saw the two along side each other.

I agree with Roger.

Way to fast on the low speed. I would look at the Delta 46-460 if you are looking to not break the bank. Not much higher but IMHO way more lathe.

Get a Jet 1642 and you will be happy. 1 1/2 or 2hp will be great. I have the 1 1/2 and love it.
