This started out as avery conventional form turned from madrone burl. It was turned to about a 1/16" wall thickness while very wet. The wood deforms as it drys and creates interesting shapes. It is finnished with Trans tint dyes and laquer. Aprox 11" high and 5" wide.
The next piece is maple, turned aprox. 11" diameter and 2.5" deep. I carved the piece and guilded the interior with 24K gold leaf.

Two great pieces! I'm glad to see you posting your stuff... I remember your piece from the contest last year which was very nice!

I saw your madrone piece at the Peachstate Woodturners earlier this month. It's very interesting and strange how it distorts like that. Still, I am with the others, that sunburst piece is super nice.

Lot of folks like the distorted madrone pieces - I just have not been a fan of that look. The platter, on the other hand, is excellent! And, REAL gold leaf, to boot. Nothing looks as good as the real stuff - lays down so nice, and has a luster that the composite just can not provide. It is just that most of us won't pay the price for it. Great job!

I'm liking both pieces! Really fine job. I don't have any of that madrone but I got lots of maple and that platter is quite an inspirational piece!

Nice work. That madrone really distorted well. The first piece I turned (and am waiting for it to fully dry) isnt distorting that much! :( I probably should have done like you and went to 1/16" but I was worried about what the wood would do and afraid of blowing through the side.
