Went to the local woodturners guild meeting last night and met a new gentleman who owned a saw mill. In the bed of his truck he had some wood sample including this burl. He wanted $20 for it which seemed reasonable to me. 20"l x 16"w x8"tall. Unfortunately, the centers out of it so can't use it as one big piece, so cut it up for some nice HF, pen and bottle stopper blanks. Should I Anchorseal or let dry?

Jim, I couldn't possibly burden you with this wrinkly old wood. I'll just soldier through it.

I'd seal it... Never hurts to add a little anchorseal.

I'd say that's a heck of a deal!

Just remember those voids in the middle are meant as divine inspiration telling you that there should be voids in the finished form!;)

Cherry burl is one of the best. Great color and figure. Hope to see the finished pieces.

you could sand, oil, and finish it just the way it is .. then hang that on the wall ...

Great looking burl, and should make for some nice turnings. Seal it quick as it will crack fast.

I don't agree with the anchor seal. I would leave it uncovered through it in the yard let is spalt, rot, and get some bugs living in it for about a year and then send it to me. :D

Alan,

i have a few chips that fell off when moving it in the garage. I'll put them in a sandwich bag and bring them out next time I'm in SA. That's all you need for your cast pieces......right???:D

Nate,

That won't hurt but make sure there is some rot on them.

Alan...I think he has you pegged! It's a sign that you've established a niche when folks can make a reply like that and we all get it!! :D:D

Honestly...I'd do something with it now if it were mine. Great deal...I may have to find out more about this guy out your way...
