I'm thinking about making a swirly lighthouse peppermill out of bloodwood/maple. Does anyone here know if the wood is toxic? I can't seem to find any definitive answer. The one below is maple/walnut. I thought a red and white one would be attractive.

I ran through an old USDA bulletin in a binder from school...that's a little far back! Short answer is it is safe. So far only the rosewoods...Cocobolo to be specific, and some of the Ligum(sp?) species are bad. Cypress and some other sappy woods turn well, but will impart a bad stink on your corns.

Hi Betty..I'd put shellac on the inside as a "barrier" just in case. Let us see the finished mill!

Thanks for the info Jim. You bet I will Michelle. Ron's gonna cut me some chunks from the nice bloodwood board we mortgaged the house for. :)
