Having some fun experimenting with inlay... abalone & stained wood veneers

Anyone have a good source for bulk boxes... I love doing these, very relaxing trying to put the puzzle back together after I re-arrange the pieces to cut. Currently doing the 1-box-per-day-with-coupon deal at Michael's and Hobby Lobby.

Mike,

I've used these folks http://stantonmfg.com/ and was happy with the quality. The prices have risen somewhat I see since my last order. I also purchased bulk boxes from a company out of CA called Tuffweld, I can't find them now>(

Very nice work. it looks like your stained wood is an applique rather than an inlay or is my eyesight worse than usual today?

Where did you get your abalone?

I have used Moslow for wood boxes in the past. Better quality than Hobby Lobby or Michael's.

Abalone was from ebay - I've also ordered 'tinted' samples from inlayusa . com (have yet to get them yet)

Yes, I stained the wood veneer (from Michael's) - and I did not get the depth of the laser cut enough, so it does stick out some
Does that make it an applique (vs inlay) ?

Thanks for the box info!

I think the "applique look" is really good - better than flush to my eye.

Do you have to adjust the size of the pieces to account for the kerf or is it marginal so you just leave it as is?

Nice work. I'm gonna have to give it a go myself.

Thanks!

Vicki, used my laser engraver @ 5%S / 100%P (although I'm sure it could use more speed to reduce the char)
