I recently started refurbishing an old beading plane and noticed something that does not make sense. The part of the blade that does not have to do any cutting is fairly broad and it made me wonder if there was something I am missing. Could it be for a different cut then what I am using it for or was the template blade they started of just very wide? Any ideas

Looks like a plane that was made as a blank which was then capable of being made into a number of shapes. Or perhaps the extra blade width stabilizes the force of the bead on the opposite side.
In any case, it looks like a good user.

Looks like the correct blade to me.

The plane looks to be an edge beading plane.

That's the way they're made. The design gets the wedge tip back out of the way of the shaving. There are other things going on involving the making a beading plane that makes a relatively big blind side off-set an advantage. Still though, you'll find this off-set on fixed fence molding planes. Every thing is just fine, keep going just the way you are.
