A friend of mine gave me this piece of wood but the label wasn't on. Can anyone identify it for me?

Looks like marblewood. Fairly hard and somewhat coarse, but it polishes up very nicely!

Marble Wood is what I was going to say until I noticed the relative size of the grain. The blank and it's black striations are much bigger (based on the likely size of the tool) then marble wood I have used. If it were smaller I would definitely say Marble Wood but this piece I am not so sure. No idea what else it could be though.

Black Limba?

Based on looking at pictures I think it is Black Limba. Now does anyone have suggestions on what to make out of it? It is 5.75 square by 2.25 thick. I was thinking about making it a square plate but I've not made one and would hate to mess it up.
Thanks,
Paul
