We are getting a new commander at the end of September. We are really going to miss our outgoing commander, who is truly an inspirational leader. The Senior NCOs are providing the box (I am providing the work and the rest are paying for the materials) and the field grade officers are paying for the contents to give the old man on the way out the door.

There were a lot of firsts for me in this project-- first time using the "lock miter" router bit I bought a couple of months ago

I got it when it was on sale for $12.91
It was also the first time I used my raised panel bit I got around the same time-- it was a steal as well at under $15. (milwaukee)

I also had fun coming up with the locking mechanism for the front--- I used a keyhole bit to create grooves. The friction fit of the top onto the screws is pretty strong and it has a very satisfying mechanical feel to it. To open the box, you slide the top back and lift the front out. If you need to remove the top at all (though I can't imagine you ever would) you have to pull the top forward and then lift it off. I left it unfinished on the sliding faces and added a little wax.

The carving on the front was done on my Carvewright. I filled the carve with minwax black stain and scraped after drying. The finish for the whole thing is blonde shellac with a little amber mixed in followed by rattle-can lacquer.

here's one last pic for perspective
