I made this to enter into an art contest. I like the saying "form follows function" but in this case "function" got lost and "form" had to find its own way. This was a challenging shape to hollow. I wanted it to be light weight but got it a little too thin and I broke out a small hole when rubbing out the lacquer. Added three more similar openings to make it look intentional.

The top is curly maple and the legs (tentacles) are persimmon, it is 8-1/2" dia x 7-1/2" high. The finish is lacquer.

Nice wooden jelly fish! I like the wood, I agree that the top must have been a bear to hollow.

interesting concept. I like it both ways, but the right one makes me think it's gonna scoot..

A jellyfish!! That was my first thought when seeing the second pic. Nice work, Dennis, and a good save.

A dead jelly fish (I prefer the legs up version), unique and thought provocing. Id treat the tentacle ends somehow - carve to a spear shape or paint the tip or....

Pretty cool! I am quite certain this is the first maple jellyfish I have seen posted here! Great concept!
