Greetings fellow turners: Sharon, wife of 43 years, asked me to make some Santa Fe style pots for table decorations at a Nov church event. They will eventually be given to each person at the table as a party favor.
206107 The model is this pot we bought in Santa Fe in the 80's. It is 4" tall, 5" at the waist and has a approx 2" base and neck. I
206106
I knew I needed 9 good pieces so I cut several blanks to start the process. This also delayed the actual turning while I developed a plan and some confidence.
206115To achieve some degree of uniformity I made templates from 1/4" ply for the critical dimensions. I'm not trying to duplicate as much as show a family resemblance between the pieces.
206108We thought an embelishment would would add value so I copied some patterns and taped them to the blank after turning the outside.
I pierced the pattern with an awl and thus transferred the image to the blank.
206109A dental tool provided the cutting and soon I was able to fill the pattern with turquoise.
206110I opted to open the inside with a 2 1/8 forstner bit and then finished the job with a Jameison Hollowing System.
206116Laser guided, carbide tipped cutter and 15 minutes later the inside is ready for sanding.
So, I'm off and turning on this project. I'll post the results soon.
