Hi Creekers,

the last week (and this one), my office hasn't seen me http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowsmile.gif. I needed a few days to relaxe. The best relaxation to me is to do something in my shop.

Since there was a backlog on handle making, I had the chance to reduce it a bit. But there were a few additional things I wanted to make for a longer time as I needed to make a saw till for my shop and I wanted -finally- to make a prototype of a Halfback saw. A few vintage saws needed some attention, too. The restoring of a D-20 handle I showed in another thread already.

Sawtill:

As usual, I took only left overs and scrap pieces for the till. The whole shop furniture is made this way. The drawers still have to be completed. They are in progress.

Here it's mounted already.

The Halfback prototype:

The blade is a left over. It was one I tested the taper grinding on a stroke belt sander with. The process caused some bad scratches so this blade was just handy for a prototype. It`s toothed to 10 TPI x-cut, the blade length is 17". The Pear handle was done in a traditional based design with some details we use on other saws to keep the "corporate identity" http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowsmile.gif

Right now Pedder and I are discussing the saw. Maybe it will get a very other design or we will make two types of Halfbacks, we'll see.

One last word to the saw till. Yes, it has limited space and no, there's no chance to make a larger one. This one got literally the last piece of wall space in my little shop. It shall store only the user saws. So more users I'm not allowed to have http://www.forums.woodnet.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowbiggrin.gif

Maybe you can make a two layer till when that one fills up. One under that and a piano hinge to allow you to open the front one to get to the ones behind.

Ingenious idea, David!

That would be a way and I could hide some saws:D. Actually I intend to make another display till for saws that will not be used. I do need some exhibition saws that shouldn't have using tracks. This display will find a nice place outside of my space limited shop.

Do I detect a little bit of Groves design in your half back saw???? Very nice straight handle on the ebony handle dovetail saw!!

Yes, one can say so, George:D:D:D
As I wrote in a former thread, I'm hooked with the design of one your closed handles. On this one I tried to to catch a little bit of the elegance of yours by sizing down the neck visually. At least you detected that;)

The Ebony handeled Gent's saw was a birthday present I've got this year from Pedder and Alex, another woodworker friend. He's a high talented cabinet maker and turner who made the handle for this saw.

I noticed your plane till in the background. How do you secure the planes?

I noticed your plane till in the background. How do you secure the planes?

In a very common way. 2 fasteners one at the top, the other one at the bottom secure the plane. If you want to take one plane out, it has to be lifted about 1/4" then the lower fastener gives the plane free and it can be put out.

And yes, all the fasteners and other stuff are made out of scrap freehanded and eyeballed. I hate it to be accurate and eye pleasing in my tool chest. It has to be functional not beautiful. The accuracy is saved for the workpieces;).
