Here a while back I scored a bunch of cedar. It was a tree that was downed due to a storm.
Well I cut it up into smaller pieces and made bowl blanks out of it. The tree was about 8 inches in diameter so I just cut the tree into pieces that made 5.5 inches thick blanks. The bark is still on the tree, if that might make a difference in what is going on.

Well after cutting them a friend and I waxed the ends and I thought well all is good and in about a year we will have about 45 cedar bowls to turn. Well now where I waxed them is turning black mold looking stuff. I assume it is mold figuring the wet content of the wood. Am I right, is it bad wood now or ??????

If needed I can post pics of it also.

I'll bet it's just surface mold... When in doubt, mount a chunk on the old spinny thing and see what happens.

Yeah, it's probably just on the outside bit. Cedar is a fairly resilient wood.

Good deal. Next spring I should have enough bowl blanks for a bowl service of about 40 to 50 people... lol
