View Full Version : Faux Antique Finish on Red Oak - Best Method?

I making a Machinist's Toolchest out of some red oak that my son-in-law gave me. The oak is 6/4 that I ripped into 1/2" wide strips. I'll glue the strips into the sizes that I need.

I want to give the finished product an antique look. I rarely work with oak and have never tried a faux antique finish on oak. On other woods, I first use orange dye, lightly sand, then apply a dark stain or a black dye.

On red oak, i've read that I should first apply a pore filler, such as Timbermate. I was thinking of mixing the orange aniline dye into the pore filler, then (after sanding) apply a stain. Or should I use Red Oak Timbermate, then apply the dye? I've been told that the application of the water-based dye could loosen up and remove the pore filler.

Any ideas?
