Turned out well, used a shelving bracket for the post... wood is about 9" tall / 6" wide.
Bartered with a co-worker for a ride to airport - to be given as a wedding gift.

Came out great Mike.......but the shelving bracket needs to go......or atleast try to find a black one.

I agree with Steve, it's a nice marker, well designed and well done, but a dowel would complete the look better. Or a really straight twig!

The problem with the post was 'adherance' to the tree slice, and still being able to be shoved into the ground - especially here in red clay country.
I'm all up for ideas on a wood post, and how to adhere it to the thin wood.

Two things come immediately to mind:
1. drill a hole and put wood glue in the hole before inserting the stick.
2. 2-3 wood screws through the stick into the back of the slab.
Put a point on the stick and it should go in as easily as a shelf bracket will.
