Hi. I'm pretty new to turning. I just got a Jet 1642 about 6 or 7 months ago. I have been looking at scroll chucks for the lathe and can't decide what to buy. I was looking at the Oneway Stronghold chuck and the Oneway Talon chuck. The descriptions say the Stronghold is recommended for lathes with a 16" swing or larger. The Talon says it is recommended for lathes with a 16" swing or smaller. Mine is 16", so it seems both would work. For those with experience, which one would you buy?

I have a couple Nova G3s and one Nova SN2 that I use on my Jet 1642 and on a Griz Midi. Have no issues with either one.

Either would likely be ok, but the stronghold is a larger chuck if you ever did a large outboard turning. I don't have either. I own 2 SuperNova2's and at $99 on sale, they are a good buy and I have never had any problems holding blocks even up to 15 1/2".

I'll have to check out the Nova chucks. I haven't looked at them.

I also have a 1642 and have a Nova G3 and 2 SN2s. They're a good deal. IF it's in your budget, the Onweays are a better chuck. I've turned with them and they seem much better than the SN2. They cost too much for MY budget, so I'm using the Novas. They work well for me, they have not failed to perform. I've even broken tenons on the smaller G3.

and, until they run out, Teknatool has reconditioned SN2's for $99

I just got one of the reconditioned SN2's and it would be hard to tell it from new. It was about $135 with the insert and shipping. Highly recommended.
