Derek's thread reminded me a of a silly question I had the other day. . .

It's of little importance, as I know well enough not to start building things dependent on hardware until I have said hardware, but having never had an iron vise in my hands, I'm unsure if I'm correct in my assumption: When I look at something like the Jorgensen (http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=65572&cat=1,41659) vise, and it tells me it requires a space 14 1/2" long for the spindle and guide rods, would I be correct in assuming this length requirement would be lessened by however thick a wooden chop I mounted to the vise (as that would keep the mechanism from "closing" that much more) or am I misunderstanding something about the underside of these things?

You're right. It is lessened.
