? for molding plane users

How do you deal with making a molding on all 4 edges of a solid board? The planes obviously can't be used on end grain and I can't think of another way with out using a router:eek: . Thanks

You can use a molding plane on end grain Aaron. It's a bit of a pain, but it will work. The iron has to be extremely sharp and you have to take as light a cut as you can set the plane to take. Figure that the end grain will take 3-4 times as long as the long grain. One trick to help is to remove as much of the waste as possible with a rabbet plane and only do the final shaping with the molding plane.

After you cut the moulding on end grain you may need to scrape it to clean it up. I use an old card scraper, that I've actually dremelled profiles into as needed. It will clean up nicely, but as Dave said the iron must be sharp. Really sharp, scary sharp time three.
