View Full Version : Color fill question on drink coasters

For anyone who has done similar projects, I am contemplating making 'family crest' engraved drink coasters for my family after reading the recent marble/tile posts.

My question is, do I have to seal them after engraving? If so, what would be a good non-slip coating one could use?

I'd like to color fill as well - any suggestions on what not to use (besides the obvious answer of 'watercolors')?

Same question if I was to use glass or acrylic...

Please & Thank you

I have used marble sealer from HD. As far as color fill, I use artists oil paint. Never tried watercolor but wouldn't think it would hold up.

I will be doing a lot less stone since HD discontinued the 2 marble colors I used the most, white and brown. I have started used ceramic and Cermark to replace the white but so far haven't found a good replacement for the brown, which was a favorite.

Jeff,
Did that sealer cause any discoloration? Assuming it was 'clear'

I was thinking enamel for the paint.

Thanks!

The sealer does darken it a little. Most noticable was the brown which laser white but after sealing they need a white fill to look their best. White tiles were no issue. I never seal any granite.
