Handsaw Screws - Method to the madness

Was watching the Ron Herman DVD on saw sharpening, and he made a passing comment on the layout of the screws that hold the handle to the sawplate, saying there "was a method to the madness" but did not explain.
This is the first mention I have ever seen regarding a method to the layout of the screws.

Can anyone help me understand this? Any place to go for more information?

Loved the DVD. It beats the Tom Law DVD all to heck. Quite watchable too!
He simplifies and demonstrates clearly all the requirements to sharpen a saw well.
Highly recommended.

His joint DVD however, is not recommended.

I thought the Tom Law video was pretty good. What am I missing?

Tom Law was pretty good, the Ron Herman is excellent.
