I have noticed a lot on interest here and on other forums with building your own work bench...using hand tools. I remembered reading a good article on this and finally found it in the 12 chapter 1927 version of ' How to Work with Tools and Wood" by Stanley Tools. The section is called " This Will be a Bench". The 1927 version give instructions using hand tools only...especially planes..while later versions differ to using power tools also, at the expense of hand tool info. An interesting read.
Readily availiable on Ebay and probably at your local used book store. But try to get the 1927 version.
