After years of reading about the "mysterious nib" on hand saws I finally ran across a Disston rip saw with the aforementioned nib! The saw was at an estate sale and the woman selling it had no idea of its historical significance. The saw was in sad shape - no sign of any etching, broken handle, missing rivet, etc., but to me it was a great moment in an otherwise lousy garage sale day.

Peter,

Maybe all the saws you have found in the past were pre-nib...

Not to be confused with a pre-nup.

Congrats (assuming you purchased it). Please post a picture. I'd like to see it before restoration. If I have a matching saw nut I'll send one along.

I have a few dibs... my favorite is a basically unused 1880s #7 26" long and I think 5ppi rip... I got it for $10.it got 1 pass with a file and the teath were shinny from bullet to tip, a set and a second pass with the file and the saw was cutting perfectly.
