Ok, I have two examples one with 2 boxes and one with a box and lines making a c channel and the bottom example is what I am looking to be able to accomplish. For this example I just did a trace tie the line tool to show what I want. I have some complex line art I want to use to cut the top off of some plastic to give it character.

So the question is how do you take two items as in the first example and convert it to just a single editable line? as in the bottom example.

Although with something like this I find it easier to use snap to objects and redraw the lines I did have success doing it this way.

Ungroup all - convert to curves - break all nodes - segment delete tool and click on what you do not want- done.

Mike your my hero that worked the sample I sent was just that what i am working on would take 30 - 40 to re do.
