This is a 12" x 4 3/4" bowl from some spalted maple I had rough turned 10 months ago. It needed some treatment with tightbond II and water to firm up a few soft spots, but otherwise, it was fine. I treated it with General salad bowl finish, 4 coats, but I used my own prescription. I wet sanded on the lathe with 0000 steel wool, then wiped off all wet finish....let it harden overnight and then reapplied as before.

C&C always welcome,

Thanks, Mike Ash

It is my kind of bowl Mike... I like the thick rim and Spalted Maple is a beautiful piece of wood.
You mentioned "General Salad Bowl Finish"... is that walnut oil based?? If not, I am sure people would love to learn your "special recipe".
I use Mike Mahoney's walnut oil finish and it has worked very well in the past.
I would love to see a future picture where you have a nice selection of greens in there (don't forget to have some radicchio in there too)
Great Job!

Very nice. That should make a good user. The wood is really nice, not only spalt but some feathering too! Sweet.

That is a beauty. I like thicker bowls with simple lines. I use either Mahoneys walnut oil or antique oil.

Simple is sometimes the least forgiving, but you nailed it. Nice curve and heft and the figure is great.

Mike,
We see lots of artistic work and beautiful tall finials. They are a joy to the eye but well shaped bowl that shows off nature's handiwork and finds a place in our daily use is it's own kind of art. Nice job. Did you encourage the spalting or find it after it happened naturally.

Thanks for the comments folks. Faust asked about the spalting....it is natural. The log that this bowl came from had been along a fellow's property line and he offered it to me. There were sparks galore in the first chainsaw cut, but I'm a slow learner and was determined. A few sharpenings later, I decided that the best plan was to only take wood from the portion of the tree that would have been too high to hang wire!! There is more of this tree that I'm going back after this weekend!!!
