I've been buying birch at Rockler in Schaumburg (they have a 2 for 1 right now) and sheetgoods at Owl Lumber in Des Plaines, but since I live in Wauconda and Lake and McHenry Counties are so rural, I've gotta believe there is a mill or other outlet in my neck of the woods. I've checked woodfinder and the only thing near me seems to be a miller in Zion and Badger hardwoods in southern Wisconsin. Any thoughts?

I used to live in Palatine but have moved to south west Wisconsin where ther are a large number of mills however most wont ship, but there is a place in Richland Center, west of Madison, that supplies woodcraft with domestic lumber he is very resonable and will ship. The name is ocooch hard wood you will have to call information I don't have the number right now.If you don't get it let me know and I'll dig it up. He has a price list he will send out. He also has specials he doesn't advertize on small lots like spalted maple or spalted box elder. You never know what he is going to have. He travels to all the mills buying lumber. It's worth the trip I try to go once a week because things move fast.

I've been there once, many years ago (maybe 2001). They were the only place I could find a snap in splitter for my Jet Contractor Saw. I was not aware they sold wood - I'll have to try them out.

Because of their totally bizzare hours of operation (closed Saturdays and Sundays) and only open during very regular business hours on weekdays, I can't get to them even thought they are right down the street. In my other life, I am an attorney and I don't remember the last time I left the house later than 7:00 am nor got anywhere near home before 6:30pm. I usually have to skip out of work early just to hit the Woodcraft!

That is a good question!! I also live in Northern IL and I usually go to OWL for their wide variety and pretty good prices.

Rich, I live in NW Indiana and that's the question I always ask fellow local woodworkers. It amost seems like a hardwood blackhole around here. I finally came across a man who owns his own saw mill, he works with local tree services.I found thru a freind who was having some trees removed for his property. Right now I'm waiting for some quartersawn white oak to come out of the kiln. It came from a tree that was being removed for a new subdivsion in Yorkville. The tree was from his estimate at least 250yrs old. The log was almost 75" across. So I would check with your local tree services.

Hope it helps,Russ
