I don't recall seeing anyone discussing turning hickory on here. Is it bad?

It's not bad, but I think it's scarce. I've turned a little, and it's nice wood.

No, it's not bad at all. And if it is full of worm holes, that can add to the character. Here's one I made from a dead hickory in our front yard.

Turns well indeed. Although there are many species of Hickory, some better for turning than others. The shagbark hickory I have turned was a joy but the pignut hickory had some weird heartwood that turned well but finished poorly. Guess its all in what you are able to pick up.

Wonderful stuff for sure! Wonderful grain and yes on the wormholes! And if you can't find it, get some pecan. Nearly the same thing!

Hickory vase, about 8" tall, wasn't hard to finish.204493

I have about 200+ dead Bitternut Hickory to cut down on our hunting land. Some bug or fungus got to them and they are dieing from the top down and then they rot pretty fast and the wind blows them over. I have been so busy I have not gotten up to the camp, and it has rained a lot up there and it is not travelable by truck yet so I can't get in to harvest much anyway. I will be getting some Shag Bark hickory in a month or so, if all goes right or I will have to wait until the corn is off the fields at my friends farm.

Turn it if you got it!

a local lumberyard sells hickory in 4/4 boards kiln dried. I buy it for making staved coffee mugs and bird houses. Very hard wood, but turns and finishes nicely.

Great wood to turn and finishes well.
