Inspired by my 30th High School Reunion next month, I pierced and airbrushed this elm bowl in the school colors of Maroon and Gold. One helix per decade. Finished in EM6000 waterborne lacquer. Around 8" (20 cm) across. I originally turned this green last fall at Ken Dubay's shop and only recently was it dry enough to re-turn and embellish. Sadly, Ken passed before he could ever see it.

It is a beauty. Like the symbolism in the twists. The piercing is awfully nice as well.

Eric,
Nice work...What kind of airbrush do you have?
I liked the smoothness of the piece..I have never tried finishes with an airbrush... Your piece motivated me :)
Great job!;)

Nice work, Eric. This one might show better with more of an overhead shot. Seems that would show the spiral pattern better.

Well done!!

Eric not only a great bowl, but my schools colors also. You didn't happen to go to school in northeast Pa did ya?:D

Pretty cool! I thought it was made from cedar when I first glanced at the pics.

Thanks,

Paulo, I use an Iwata HP-CS airbrush. It's a decent airbrush for this sort of work that does not break the bank. Pretty much any decent double action, gravity feed airbrush will do a good job for most turning applications. I can get a spray pattern as large as a few inches across or small enough to sign my name.

John, good idea, here is another more overhead shot. Unless I abandon the light tent, it's hard to really control any sort of overhead angle. Maybe I should make some sort of stand that lets me control the angle it sits on a bit better then propping up the back with a block of wood.

Very nice. I would have thought this to be two different pieces of wood.

About the only thing I can reliably glue together is my fingers

Adore the shape..nice & bold..adore the piercing and the swirl shape of the piercing, and I like the color combo. this bowl "has it". Great piece!

I have never tried piercing but would be interested in doing it. What do I use any info will help.

People who do lots of piercing tend to use pneumatic rotary tools similar to a dental hand-piece (NSK Presto or Turbocarver being the most common), but with a bit of patience people can achieve similar results with more conventional rotary tools like a Dremel or a flex shaft (Fordam, Wecheer).

Will have to try my old dremel.
