Well the LOML gave me another drawing on Tuesday night while we were watching TV and wondered what something like that might look like. So I head to the shop the next morning to fiddle around and see what I could come up with. She wanted this one with no lid and after seeing it done now wants one dyed blue with a lid. So guess I will get to it this afternoon. Anyway it came out pretty nice with the scallops on the edge. It is 5 1/2" tall and 4 1/2" across. It is dyed with red transtint and lacquer finish.

Nice dye job; really nice! You obtained a very nice red color. My transtint ends up kind of orange red compared to the more crimson you have. I like yours. the black edge and base set it off well too. Very nice piece.

Really nice, Bernie! I assume it was maple? The color came out great, and the design department is doing a fantastic job.

Bernie....Your wife has good taste and you have the skills to satisfy it! Nicely done!Well, Ken, perhaps she "developed" good taste after marrying Bernie - not to sure of her taste prior to that!!!:D;):D

Bernie,
That is a great job. How did you cut the scallops? I know I could mess that up in a heartbeat! Beautiful work.

Bernie - you are "'fortunate" to have someone pushhing you toward the shop. It could be a paint brush or wallpaper!! I really like the piece, not only the general form, but the precision with which you executed the scalloped edge. Nice!

Thanks everyone. John she does have pretty good taste for sure. She wants me to do some bigger ones now that she thinks I have these down. I am posting one tomorrow dyed Teal color. Not sure I like it but she does so guess all is good.

Ed the scallop are done by using the indexing on the lathe. It has 24 index detents. I make a mark for each one using the tool rest. I found a lid that will span 4 marks. So I mark my half circle using the lid. I use a oscillating spindle sander to make the scallops. I got the sander at Menards that just opened. They had it on sale at half price and couldn't pass it up at $84.50. Works like a dream. You have to have patiences and care when sanding the scallops for sure.

Real nice work Bernie. I really like the fact that you blackened the edges of the scallops. That really ties the piece together.
