I needed a one day project, so I made a little potpourri bowl. This was made from a 2" x 4" that was a couple of feet long before I cut it up. The wood is chechan, also known as black poisonwood. I chose a little different shape to try and show more wood across the top since the wood was so pretty.

60 pieces of chechan and 1 curly maple bottom panel. It is 6.75" across and 3" tall. The walls are approx. 1/4" thick. It was sanded to 600 grit and then finished with 3 coats of Antique Oil. The lid came from Craft Supplies.

Comments and critiques are welcome and thank you for looking! :)

Robert, that really is some beautiful wood!! Seems I have heard of chechan before, but is it called poisonwood for a reason??

As always, great joinery and a very interesting form.

Robert, that is a beauty! Really like that wood and your form really does show it off. Outstanding job. John, it seems like the sap is toxic, somewhat like poison ivy but the wood itself safe to handle. Might be a good idea to wear some type of good respirator though.

I did a little research about the wood and found this interesting link:

You segment guys kill me! The shape really keeps me looking. It's almost to pretty to be a potpourri pot. Very cool all the way around Robert!

I have a couple of chunks of this wood in my exotics pile, I think I turned a top for an urn out of it but that is all so far. It is pretty wood and pretty dense also as I remember. It sure worked well in the segmenting you did on this one!

Great pot,

Jeff

Great piece Robert. Taking advantage of the wood grain by doing the top end in that shape was a nice touch too. Well done.

Robert, good looking potpourri bowl. I had no idea the wood was so beautiful.

I got the willies when I read your title. A Bahamian friend one tangled with some live poison wood. His whole arm looked like he had second degree burns. Not an experience I care to have. I can spot it from a mile away.

Sounds like some nasty stuff to work with but it sure is pretty! I still have no idea how you can get the joinery so tight! I turn from solid pieces of wood that have more cracks showing than your work!!
