These pieces were chosen for a juried art show at the Eau Claire Public Library.
The jury consisted of Two senior librarians and who have hosted this show for 15 years and an art teacher from the university and one from a local high school.
They will be on display for 6 weeks. There were 32 items chosen from our club.:D

No secret why. You must be friends with the judges...........not. Those pieces are great. Really liking that Box Elder. That is a great piece. What type of wood is the NE?

I really like the Box elder vessel Jeff, but you should have applied some permanent red dye with a thin brush where the red on the side is now. Most of that will probably be gone when you pick it up after the show closes, as it's going to fade quickly under light exposure.

Isn't there anything you can do to keep the red in place? This piece is about 3 mo. old,the color has darken considerably since I finished it.It has several coats of BLO then several coats of shellac.

Jeff - my understanding is that you can really slow down the fading process if you use a finish that offers UV protection. Not sure what brands that would be but I would think if you visited your local Menards - you should be able to find something that is clear and intended as an outdoor finish that has the UV protection.

Both the BLO and shellac have darkened the wood, and there is no known wood finish that has PROVEN UV fading resistence, although there are some wild claims out there.

Jeff, The only things that claim to have some UV resitance ar the "SPAR" type varishes. They do come in a water base now too and I have used them on somethings that are for outdoor use. The red will eventually change to a brownish color over time, even if it is not put in direct sunlight. I do have a couple pieces that have held the red for a few years, but the wood was bone dry when I turned it, not sure if that is the reason but so far so good.

I guess I should have stayed in the club, is it only for the turners or are there other artists and mediums in the show? I saw something in a little flyer about it, but did not pay much attention to it.

Hope it goes well for you,

Jeff
